To Guild Or Not To Guild

...That, is the question.

No, seriously, should we form a guild?  Or should we be a role playing group?  I can see advantages and disadvantages to either choice and I don't have a strong preference in either direction.

Perhaps having a guild is a good thing if for no other reason than we won't get any anonymous guild invites any time we visit a large city.  Smile

Or perhaps we would treat a guild charter as a contract of sorts for whatever "organization" we decide upon in the brainstorming thread.

Anyway, please share your feelings and opinions one way or the other.
Tatum

I, personally, really like the idea of having a guild. Even if it remains something not IC. The ability to see who's on... where they are, ect is appealing to me because when I'm on, I don't have much time.

Just my two cents.
Eto

An honest opinion for a guild ..

I think the premise will be defined as those that choose to do this come forward.  It is possible for those that intend to play as chief characters in the days ahead to call themselves by a name, and even cloth themselves in matching tabards if the guild is something that should be identified with by others.  But for every player who sees the need to join such a guild, there may be players who won't agree with everything the guild represents, or feel as though they can operate more effectively with regular contact only, but having that "license" to operate outside it's boundaries without worrying about leaving companions behind.  Lone wolves, or recluse characters, is what I mean.

I don't believe the notion of what your guild goals are should step on your character storylines.  Like was mentioned on the forums, we should just roll with whatever comes our way, and respond as our characters would respond to certain situations.  If that means that we must fight to secure Westfall from the Defias bandits for a few weeks, then so be it.  The more important thing to recognize within one another is that once a task is done, it's done.  Don't get caught in the "respawn" trap!

The undead scourge is a great cross-realm/level/faction story arc.  But our characters should uncover this threat as a natural progression, through bits and pieces, and unless you make it a core part of your backstories, others shouldn't know about such a threat until they are directly informed of it.

Right off the bat, I'm looking at Stormwind being a prime place to meet one another.  Sounds as though most of us are rerolling characters, and the city acts as a central hub to begin with.  I suggest meeting there, feeling one another out, and letting the story flow from there.
Lyssira

Eto, I find myself in complete agreement with everything you have said.

In fact, as a result of thinking about your post I would like toadd a small amount of interpretation and present that on the Brainstorming thread.

Please have a look at my post there at your convneience and make any corrections for my misunderstanding if you find any.
felandria

I agree with Eto. I think that it would be best to let the members decide. If we do decide to do this simply as a group and not a guild then I suggest that we at least have some sort of channel to keepin touch with each other. It'll be difficult to coordinate things and such entirely through whispers.
Evern

Ahh, but that's the point of FIRP, no whispers... I agree, let the people choose!
Lyssira

Very often, things would likely be organized through mail messages and through face to face meetings.  True, whispers are somewhat of a convenience, but they have to be either OOC or considered as originating from some magical source.  Many people may claim to have goblin communicators, but I have always found that idea a little contrived.  I prefer mail and face to face.

Evern

Yea, the hearthstones as walkie-talkies always seemed kinda wierd, and really only those with magical talent could talk through that. (eg: mages, locks, mabye priests and pallys)
Gordonov Andreus

((I think that a guild would be fine, if members want to join one.  I see this as a place for all FIRP'ers to communicate out of game, but a guild with a good story of why it's there would be cool with me, I'd definitely join up!))
Brenry

Guild

I think we should make a guild to make it easier to keep track of each other. The whole hearthstone walkie talkie thing is what my Horde side RP guild uses, we just call them Buzzboxes.
Evern

We could have several guilds, just this is the FIRP forum for the server!
Eto

The Picture

I'm not sure if the message is getting through, but the enthusiasm is awesome!  I hope this doesn't outright chase people off, this reply.

I think, in terms of a FIRP guild, what Lyssira means is a group of heroes in where the stream of events provided by the game swirls about them.  If you can think of The Fellowship in Lord of the Rings, that's the sort of guild she's talking about - and it's also why she seems to be on the fence as to whether or not we should be considered a guild until we define our own goals and stories for ourselves.

If you read the forum post carefully, guild chat can have little or no use in a FIRP environment.  You make arrangements to meet through the mail system or in person.  Or, if you're lucky, you get to meet with your guildmates on a regular, adventure filled basis.  It's the available time and enthusiasm of the players that determine how much activity you get out of a FIRPing guild - not chat channels and website schedules.  Basically what you put into your fellow players, you get out as your game experience.  As it should be.  Ironically enough, spending less time talking (like me) and more time DOING is the recipe for success in this guild.  We can't set up events here on this board - we have to BE IN THERE MAKING THEM HAPPEN!

Now this hypocrit is going to eat his own words and log in for an hour.  Remember that we're all there, we just have to find one another!
Tatum

I agree with what Eto said.

But I'll state again that I would *prefer* to have a guild... whether OOcly or no. I'm all for not using guild chat. Forcing myself to use the mail system that's in game sounds like a good deal of fun. And also... who doesn't want to get letters? Very Happy I use my friends list for something else. List of players I *know* Icly... and now that there are notes, how I know them/feel about them ect... just incase. The reason for being in a guild for me, would be easy access to like minded people and where they are. I know that's taking Ooc Ic... to an extent, but I don't have the time to wander all over Azeroth as I once did looking for Rp. I'm on frequently but those times that I'm on are often short. It's unfortunate but there's nothing I can do to change that. And, of course, I don't mean to *only* Rp with those in the guild, but it helps, as I said above, to have a group of like minded people. In case I need a fix. Razz
Eto

That's exactly how I use my friends list and will likely use my guild list, as things continue.

I've already added several of the names of players who have come forth as being involved in Lyssira's effort.  While seeing them online and their locations doesn't dictate where I go in the game, I can always give myself a strong excuse to make my way to their location and bump into them in my travels.

I also like the idea of using a guild chat channel as a way to touch base with guild members who are on, but are spread out.  A quick * in the channel could let everyone know that I'm on to play, and everyone that *'s back is affirming that they are on to play for a while as well, or that they're willing to be contacted.  If I saw a guild member (or members) in an instance, I wouldn't expect them to * back until they were done, because there's no chance for me to just stumble into ZF and go "Hey, fancy meeting you here, Tatum!"

Sum up (for my playing, anyways):

Friends List = Subtle way to steer everyone towards the same location and increase the chances of bumping into one another.

Guild Chat = Easy way to find out who I should expect to meet up with if I'm logging on to play for a while.
Orabelle

I'm gonna lean towards not having a guild.

Instead, I think we should simply have an OOC channel designed specifically for FIRPERS. Nothing has to be discussed on here, but it is a place for "all" Moon Guard FIRPERS to come and let others know who they are. These other FIRPERS wouldn't be able to join our guild if they are already in guilds of their own, so simply having a 'FIRP' Channel is the best way to create a hub for all the FIRPERS, regardless if they are in another guild or not.

I also think a guild should come as an afterthought anyway. If a guild is the way we begin to feel as we ICly progress with one another, then a guild it is. But that should be a decision we make ICly, not OOCly.
felandria

I agre whole heartedly with what Eto and Orabelle. Eto's description of what our group would be is great, and Orabelle's idea to have a channel for all FIRPers, but not including all of them in our group sounds perfect.
Brenry

If we WERE to have a guild, what would be the name? Personally, I like Bringers of the Light, but I am open to change.
Lyssira

a good question Brenry.

I have thought about this as well.  Whether we have a guild or not, once enough of us discover one another ingame we may find it appropriate to identify ourselves in some way.  We may decide on a tattoo or other marking, a piece of jewelery or a rare item that we all possess, or a name.  Or even more than one of the ways I mentioned.

I've struggled a bit over a name idea, and, sad to say, I haven't had any that I consider worth mentioning just yet.
Brenry

We could all try to get the Scarlet Crusade tabard, although it is extremely rare (I didn't know it existed till I found it a couple days ago.)
Bargur

The Dawn Offensive.

a guild seems like a nice idea, its easier than trying to add everyone to your friends list, if for no other reason than that i think it would be worth it.  And it would add to a sense of unity as well

I suggested this in my introduction in another thread, but I like "Lights Out".  I think it sounds menacing but still connected to the church.  Kind of like the dark underside of the church.
Sonnzo

I think that a guild idea would be awesome, besides the fact of the couple downfalls, It would establish a FIRP that people would know a little more about, as well as give a general means to help eachother out.. The guild bank for instance could be a great advantage as we get higher, as far as the guild chat goes...we could either just ignore it completely, or just use it to BS with eachother ooc, as long as its clear not to talk about characters IC actions. We could always RP out something where we get an invention from the gnomes to talk to eachother, it could be an additional storyline we can RP out. But im totally down with it just being OOC because Im loving the FIRP aspect so far, but sometimes I would just like to ask people how they are doing IRL on occasion if we become the close knit group like I am hoping. We can also all get the guild event calendar so people can remember if we meet up for things. I have a forgetful memory and having that would be a great bonus for all of us being able to meet up and continue our experience together and be a little organized about it. Hell, ill even keep pieces of parchment in my bag to simulate the guild calendar being my paper and the meetings being my notes and such. I'm still new to this so it may conflict, but I also like to see whos an FIRPer instead of random names i get for my friends list from people who decide to make themselves known publicly
