Aedrean has a secret. It turns out that he's not alone in his body, he shares it with a being that exlempifies everything he's not. X is cold hearted, brutal, and has no need for friends, just stepping stones so that he can achieve power. And X is gaining strength.

Now Aedrean is contemplating telling Lyssira and Consadine, the two he trusts most, about this and his planned meeting with Darkstar. For X might take over at the inoppurtune time and turn sides.

X had gathered enough strength to take over Aedrean's body for the meeting with Darkstar, and he'd succeded in making a deal with the leader of the Covenant. Now Aedrean has to contact those he trusts, to tell them of the coming treachery, all the while keeping control from X.
